The Association for the Study of Women and Mythology (ASWM) Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to ASWM. This policy explains our information practices and the choices you can make about the way your Personal Information is collected through our “Website” (https://womenandmyth.org).

What kind of information does ASWM collect?

Website visitors may use the Website without submitting Personal Information. However, to join or renew, donate, access certain content and register for events, users will need to create an account or otherwise provide us with Personal Information. We request:

Name and username
Contact information, including mailing address, email address, website and phone number
Membership level
Interests and volunteer requests
Event-related preferences, including dietary preferences

As permitted by applicable law, when you visit the Website (including our social media pages and channels) or open our emails, we and our third-party service providers and vendors, such as social media widgets, and analytics providers, collect certain information, including Personal Information, by automated means, such as cookies, web beacons, pixels, and web server logs.
We never collect or maintain information at our website from those we actually know are under 18 years of age, and no part of our website is structured to attract anyone under 18 years of age. If we learn that a user is under 18 years of age, we will promptly delete any Personal Information that the individual has provided to us.

For organization history, ASWM keeps records of roles you may have played on boards, committees, awards, event attendance, presentations and associated activities. We also keep track of event speakers, event sponsors, and other individuals with whom we have interacted. When you interact with our social media pages, channels, and content, we receive your profile name and identifier and the content of your submissions.

How does ASWM use the data collected?

We use the information we receive to respond to your inquiries, communicate with you, manage and facilitate ASWM activities and events, improve the events and resources we develop and make available, and generate reports for internal business and member purposes.

We use the information you provide about yourself to complete registrations, fulfill your information requests, and provide you with the services and resources applicable to your membership standing. We process and retain this Personal Information to perform our contractual obligations to our members and attendees and to meet legal obligations.

With your consent and as otherwise permitted by law, we use your email address and other Personal Information to contact you with information about our events and news.

We use social media, server and analytics information, for example, to determine how many users have visited certain Website and social media pages, social media channels, or opened messages or newsletters, so that we can evaluate, improve, and provide the content we publish, evaluate and improve how the Website functions, provide analytical data for Website traffic and management, provide you with personalized content on and off the Website and in email, and to prevent fraud. We and our vendors use and retain the automatically-collected information as necessary to provide the Service to you or until you withdraw your consent.

How does ASWM protect the data it collects?

We take precautions to protect your information. When you submit sensitive information via the website, your information is protected both online and offline.

The Website processes all payments through PayPal, and neither collects nor stores any personal payment information on the Website. We receive general transaction-related information when you make a purchase, which we use for providing you with the services you purchased and for our business reporting purposes. We use and retain the transaction information as necessary to perform our contract with you and to meet our legal obligations.
While we use encryption to protect sensitive information transmitted online, we also protect your information offline. Only volunteers who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, the treasurer or event coordinator) are granted access to personally identifiable information. The computers/servers in which we store personally identifiable information are in a secure environment.

Does ASWM share the collected data with others, and if so, what is shared and with whom?

We use, retain, and share Personal Information with outside parties only as necessary to complete a request, to meet our contractual obligations to our members, account holders, and requestors and to meet legal obligations. We share this information to the extent necessary to complete your registration, fulfill your request, and for events.

We do not disclose Personal Information about you except as described in this Privacy Policy. We do not rent or sell your Personal Information. We may publish your name and contact information in an event or general directory, online or in print. Print Directories are not to be shared among members’ friends, colleagues or, especially, email lists. The purpose for a directory is to facilitate communications among members.

We may also communicate your information with others in ASWM boards or committees in which you are participating. We share this information as necessary to help the boards and committees to function.

Do ASWM members have control over their personal data, and if so, what kind of control do they have?

Members have access to their account through the website, and can change name, contact information and membership level at any time. Changes to interests or volunteer opportunities can be made by emailing aswm@womenandmyth.org.

Members may receive periodic newsletters and emails from ASWM. Recipients can opt out of these communications at any time by emailing membership@womenandmyth.org or by using unsubscribe links, where applicable. Withdrawing consent from news and announcements does not affect our ability to send you vital communications such as security policies or data breaches.

How does ASWM Use Cookies and Other Website Technologies?

Some information is collected automatically every time you visit ASWM. ASWM and third party marketing partners collect information about your computer and assign you “cookies” (small, unique identifier text files) when you visit ASWM. You do not provide this information—it is collected automatically as a means of supporting your visit to our site. Cookies do not generally contain any personal information. Anonymous information may be used by marketing partners to deliver advertisements for products and services.

When you access the My Account area of the ASWM web site, ASWM requires you to sign in using your username and password. Once you sign in we record the information in the cookie file on your computer. We may also record your password in this cookie file. This makes return visits to the site more convenient. You can log out at any time.

Most browsers are automatically set to accept cookies but provide features that enable you to be notified when a cookie is to be placed on your browser, decline the cookie, or delete cookies that have been placed on your browser. Most mobile operating systems also provide you an option in the device settings to limit ad tracking associated with your device id. You may also check your web browser’s instructions, help files or privacy documentation for further information.

Does ASWM Use Online Remarketing Campaigns?

ASWM uses remarketing programs allowing us to reach people who previously visited the womenandmyth.org website, and match those people with the appropriate message. If you want to opt out of the display of our online advertising, which appears on other Web sites, and which is based on online interactions with womenandmyrh.org, then please click the preference icon that may appear on such advertising.

We do not respond to web browser “do not track” signals at this time. We await the result of work by the policy community and industry to determine when such a response is appropriate and what form it should take. We do allow you to exercise choice regarding the collection of information by third parties about your online activities over time and across third-party websites or online services for online interest based advertising purposes by going to www.networkadvertising.org/choices/ or www.aboutads.info/choices/ or www.youronlinechoices.com .

Law Enforcement

We process and disclose information, including your Personal Information, if we believe doing so is required or appropriate to: comply with law enforcement requests and legal process, such as a court order or subpoena; comply with the law; or protect your, our, or others’ rights, property, or safety. This processing is based on our legitimate interests in legal protection of our and others’ rights. We retain Personal Information for as long as allowed or required by statutory laws.
