2009 Goddess Scholars Symposium

With the theme “Self and Goddess: Personal, Political, Spiritual,” ASWM’s second symposium took place on May 14, 2009, at the Goodman Community Center in Madison, Wisconsin .

Keynote speaker was Egyptologist Normandi Ellis, author of Dreams of Isis, Feasts of Light, and other works that examine the significance of ancient goddess mythology to contemporary seekers. She discussed her work with the Egyptian Book of the Dead and the significance of spiritual autobiography for contemporary women.

The agenda for the day’s speakers follows.

“Goddess Studies and Cultural Issues,” featuring Kathryn Henderson (“Working with Living Traditions”), Marguerite Rigoglioso (“Bees, Goddesses, Priestesses and Prophecy”), filmmaker Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost (“Creating Budddhas:  The Making and Meaning of Fabric Thangkas”), and Barbara Criswell (“Ix Chel As She Is Honored Today”).

“Mythic Inspirations,” an annual panel in honor of Rae Atira-Soncea, featured Ruth Barrett (ritual and song), Nancy Vedder-Shults (chants/storytelling) visual artists, and Lee Melchior (puppet maker/choreographer).

“Something Wiki This Way Comes,” a discussion of goddess studies and technology by Sage Starwalker (Matrifocus) and  Susan Swope (Frog Mysteries Wiki).

Finally, an open forum for other participants to present current work, and a marketplace for book and art sales.
