The focus of this symposium is to celebrate the life and groundbreaking research of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas. Her work on Old European cultures that flourished between 9000 and 3000 BCE confirmed the existence of egalitarian social structures and concepts of the divine feminine. Gimbutas gave the name archaeomythology to this field which examines relationships among symbolism, archaeology, belief systems, language and folklore to build a comprehensive understanding of past cultures.
Gimbutas’ work has inspired the work of many contemporary visual artists and performers. For this exhibition we are seeking artworks by artists from all cultures that address these thematic areas:
- WOMEN AT THE CENTER (balanced societies engendering peace, collaboration and mutual respect)
- VOICES FROM THE LAND (Old European/Indigenous/First Nations Wisdom, symbols and enduring traditions – then and now)
- HUMAN-ANIMAL RELATIONSHIPS (sacred roles of our non-human ancestors and neighbors)
Please submit five examples of your work in jpeg/tiff/png/mp3 format and provide a link to a current gallery if available. When you are are ready to upload your file, submit a Response via the Form below.
