Modern Matriarchal Studies Panel

Matriarchal Studies Max Dashu writes of early feminist theory, “In 1970 we began asking, where are women free? Where are the egalitarian cultures, and why don’t we know about them? How can we access a fuller record of human experience, that acknowledges female sovereignty, elders, wisewomen, and spheres of power?”

Academics in the US tend to avoid the term Matriarchy to describe these cultures, because it is seen to project a mirror image of Patriarchy, with women dominating society. In Europe, however, the term has been brought into clear focus through the work of Dr. Heide Goettner-Abendroth and others.  This panel at the ASWM conference will explore the development of modern Matriarchal Studies and efforts at serious study of non-patriarchal, egalitarian societies past and present.  The panelists will be Dr. Heide Goettner-Abendroth, Max Dashu, Lydia Ruyle, and Vicki Noble.

Matriarchal Studies Day, May 10, 2012

We have been working with a group of matriarchal studies scholars in the US, to arrange their Matriarchal Studies Day to occur the day before our national conference.  Like ASWM’s conference, their event will take place at the Holiday Inn at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.  We have also arranged to co-sponsor their evening keynote presentation by Dr. Heide Goettner-Abendroth, the founder of Modern Matriarchal Studies as a branch of feminist anthropology.

When you see their program, and ours, we hope that you will want to join us for both of these exciting events!

Die Zeit ist Reif: Report on the 2011 International Congress on Matriarchal Studies

by Lin Daniels, MA, Amazon Icon Foundation

“Better to build lifeboats than to wait for the Patriarchy-Titanic to listen to reason” was the emphasis of this year’s conference.  It was an examination of what to do about the patriarchy-built looming global crisis. The conference was a feast for the mind and the heart as women from all over the world convened to find answers.

The conference was held in the medieval town of St. Gallen, at the Town Hall. The old building was transformed by the art exhibitions.  The photo exhibit by Siegrun Claaben gave glimpses of the New Matriarchal Mystery Festivals that began in 1983. They invoked the spirit of the time. “The 1000 PeaceWomen Across the Globe” exhibit displayed biographical postcards of women who have all profoundly changed lives on this planet for the better. Lydia Ruyle’s powerful banners graced all of the halls of the building. They set the atmosphere of the conference.

Dr. Cecile Keller designed and facilitated the rituals that closed the days of the Kongress, with drumming led by Isabella Verbruggen and Loes Moezelaar of the Netherlands.  We conjured a grand spectacle as hundreds of women made a sacred circle in the park in front of the town hall.

Modern Matriarchal Studies Week at the Academy Hagia

by Joan Cichon

This past July I was privileged to attend a special week long seminar taught by Dr. Heide Gottner-Abendroth at her International Academy Hagia (www.hagia.de) in Bavaria, Germany.  Entitled “Modern Matriarchal Studies,” the seminar was attended by sixteen women from Africa, Europe and North and South America.  Among the participants were politicians, activists, scholars, academicians, and artists.

We came to Bavaria for Dr. Gottner-Abendroth’s first seminar in English on Modern Matriarchal Studies, a field which she originated.
