Dr. Marija Gimbutas

For most of human history the principle of the sacred feminine cycle of life, death and regeneration fundamental to all sentient life in Nature prevailed. Since the shift from Matrifocal to Patriarchal cultural values however, women and Nature have been dismissed, subordinated, and their voices are often silenced or ignored.  Marija Gimbutas and other women of distinction in history who have achieved remarkable insights in all fields have had their achievements appropriated by men while they have been publicly  demeaned, ignored or dismissed.

M Gimbutas seminar in Sitagroi village (1968)

We would like to discuss the practices women have developed to  circumvent obstacles in their paths, in order to have their wisdom heard and to stand up for the truth. Gimbutas, remarkable women from the past like Mileva Maríc (Einstein) who actually made the scientific breakthroughs her husband claimed, and many of us today have found ways to model behavior, courage, strength  and grace in our search for truth in the face of hostility, disrespect and disregard. We would like to honor those brave, wise foremothers and share  some of their methods and responses to help us during this time of growing misogyny and global ecological crisis as we engage in our own search for truth.

Susan Moulton with two of her teachers
Dr. Susan Mouton ” I have lived with animals from an early age and began riding horses at the age of 3. For the past 52 years I have lived in Rural Sonoma County on a small farm with an array of rescued animals including 5 llamas, numerous horses currently a BLM rescued mustang and a thoroughbred, 2 donkeys, goats, ducks, parrots (one of which saved my life 3 years ago, but that’s a story for another time), dogs, cats, turtles, varying numbers of deer and a flock of 10-30 wild turkeys. I have learned a lot from each species, particularly using what I had learned from them to raise my 2 boys. To support my lifestyle, I was a university professor at a small university in Northern California for 44 years, preparing and teaching over 100 different art and art history courses. Currently I am finishing a book that combines everything I love: animals, art history, archaeology, and ecology.”
